Current Affair Gulf Breeze UFO Sighting (1992)

Gulf Breeze, Florida, is best known for the highly publicized 1987–1988 UFO photographs taken by local contractor Ed Walters. The case described here is a distinct later series of events. It concerns the wave of mostly nighttime “Red/White Lights” reported in the Gulf Breeze area primarily between late 1990 and mid-1992. These sightings featured structured light behavior captured on video by multiple observers.

According to Dr. Bruce Maccabee’s 1993 technical paper, a professional TV crew from KHOU-TV in Houston traveled to Gulf Breeze on two occasions during spring 1992 while the “Intruders” mini-series was airing nationally. Anomalous lights were observed and videotaped during both visits. Maccabee’s analysis focused primarily on the second event, which occurred on May 18, 1992, because the crew used a special high-power black-and-white camera in addition to their standard color camera.

On the night of May 18 the crew was in Gulf Breeze observing the night sky when they recorded unusual lights. Producer Leila McMurray was handed binoculars and later described seeing a ring of six red lights. The segment also featured local Gulf Breeze witnesses and skywatchers who had been following the continuing activity in the area.

The second event was observed from two separate locations roughly a mile apart. This allowed Maccabee to perform triangulation in his analysis. He determined that the lights moved along a nearly straight path at speeds exceeding 20 mph before fading out. His calculations placed the spacing between the lights at approximately 10 feet. The lights were recorded changing from red to white and back to red, and at one point they appeared to revolve around one another in a coherent formation. Maccabee noted that the objects ejected dimmer lights downward on at least two occasions during the sighting.

Dr. Bruce S. Maccabee was an optical physicist employed by the U.S. Navy who became one of the leading technical analysts of Gulf Breeze UFO imagery and the later red-light sightings. This May 18, 1992 sighting was one of roughly 170 similar reports recorded in the Gulf Breeze area during 1990–1992. It stands out because a professional television crew captured the lights on video from two locations during a field investigation, and the footage was subsequently subjected to detailed technical analysis by Dr. Bruce Maccabee in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
