Council Bluffs UFO Incident (1977)
On the cold evening of December 17, 1977, multiple independent witnesses observed unusual aerial activity near Big Lake Park in Council Bluffs, Iowa, followed by the discovery of a substantial deposit of molten metal near Gilbert’s Pond. The event has been documented through contemporary witness statements, official response records, early laboratory testing, and later peer-reviewed scientific analysis, making it one of the better-documented physical-trace cases associated with unidentified aerial phenomena.
The weather that evening was overcast with a 2,500-foot ceiling, 10-mile visibility, a temperature of 32°F, and WNW winds at 16 mph with gusts up to about 25 mph. These freezing conditions make the reported heat retention of the material particularly notable, as the central portion remained warm to the touch for roughly two hours after deposition.

Witness accounts describe related but not identical observations. The first group, consisting of 17-year-old Kenny Drake, his wife Carol, and his 12-year-old nephew Randy James, reported seeing a reddish ball at an estimated height of 500 to 600 feet falling straight down into the park while driving on North 16th Street. It disappeared behind trees, followed by a bright bluish-white flash and flames shooting upward. Mike and Criss Moore separately described a hovering round object with red lights blinking around its perimeter below the treetops. Other groups reported a bright red mass rocketing toward the ground or brief observations of something falling. At the site near Gilbert’s Pond, witnesses found a glowing orange-red mass with a bluish crystalline center on the levee. One described it as looking “like a great big sparkler at first,” then cooling to resemble “lava, glowing and bubbling,” with material running down the dike and igniting grass. At least eleven people from several independent groups provided consistent accounts of the material’s appearance and behavior.
Kenny Drake called the fire department from a payphone. Assistant Fire Chief Jack Moore responded in his personal vehicle. No firefighting crew was required. Officer Dennis Murphy later photographed the scene with Polaroid and 35 mm cameras. Eppley Airfield and Offutt Air Force Base were contacted and reported no knowledge of any aircraft incident or abnormal activity. A Braniff flight had landed at Eppley at 7:32 p.m., before the reported observations around 7:45 p.m.
The material landed approximately 16 feet from the paved road and 6 feet from the top of the levee at the location now associated with 1900 N. Eighth Street in Big Lake Park, across from Eppley airport. It burned an area roughly 4 feet wide by 9 feet long, with a secondary burn mark about 2 by 4 feet located 27 feet away on the dike. A 2–3 inch indentation was noted, and many small metal spherules were scattered, particularly toward the northeast. The deposit measured roughly 4 by 6 feet and was estimated at 35 to 55 pounds, with a thickness of about 4 inches in places. It consisted of three distinct components: solid metal, slag, and white ash inclusions within the slag.
Early testing began with a check for radioactivity, which was negative. Two rapid chemical analyses followed. Iowa State University’s Ames Laboratory and Griffin Pipe Products Company both examined the material. Griffin Pipe’s December 21, 1977 test reported carbon at 0.70%, manganese at 0.56%, silicon at 0.52%, and other elements only in trace amounts. Ames Laboratory separated the components and analyzed them using X-ray fluorescence, electron beam microprobe, and emission spectroscopy. The solid metal was chiefly iron with small amounts of nickel and chromium. The foamy slag contained metallic iron and aluminum along with smaller amounts of magnesium, silicon, and titanium. The white ash was mainly calcium with some magnesium. Microstructure indicated the material had been cast, reheated to around 1000°C, and cooled at an intermediate rate — consistent with carbon steel or reheated cast iron-like alloy produced through common industrial processes.
The day after the incident, local Air Force veteran and astronomy columnist Robert Allen investigated the site. He confirmed the line of sight from the witness locations, found no crater, and collected additional ground and material samples. He later submitted documentation and a proposed trajectory analysis to the Air Force, suggesting the object had traveled from southwest to northeast on a heading of approximately 109–110 degrees. Colonel Charles Senn’s office reportedly found Allen’s documentation impressive but rejected the possibility of space debris, noting that reentering material would not arrive in a molten state, a 35–40 pound mass should have produced a crater or wider splatter pattern, reentry debris would not appear glowing or hovering at 500–600 feet, and the samples lacked the structural characteristics expected from spacecraft or missile components.
In 2022, a peer-reviewed paper by Garry P. Nolan, Jacques F. Vallée, Sizun Jiang, and Larry G. Lemke applied advanced techniques to a surviving sample labeled CB_JV-1. Using secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) and multiplexed ion beam imaging (MIBI), the researchers found that isotopic ratios for titanium, iron, and chromium were consistent with terrestrial-normal values. However, the material showed local homogeneity within individual measured grains but overall inhomogeneity across subsamples, with significant variation in elemental concentrations (aluminum varying up to twofold, iron up to tenfold, and magnesium up to twentyfold). The authors interpreted this incomplete mixing as evidence of an industrial process whose source, handling history, and delivery mechanism remain unidentified.
In a June 2022 interview with journalist Ross Coulthart, Garry Nolan discussed the Council Bluffs molten metal sample, the unusual incomplete mixing of its elements, and the Polaroid photographs taken by police at the scene as important contemporary documentation.
In early 2026, The Sol Foundation published Science and Policy Briefing No. 3, which highlighted the 2022 Nolan/Vallée paper as the first peer-reviewed scientific analysis of physical materials associated with a multi-witness UAP event. The briefing emphasizes the value of state-of-the-art atomic and isotopic techniques for UAP forensics and summarizes how the analyses helped evaluate conventional explanations. A meteorite impact was ruled out due to the absence of cratering, the fact that a meteorite of comparable mass would not arrive molten, and the material’s elemental composition. Satellite or spacecraft debris was considered unlikely because reentering objects cool before impact, showed no structural features, and carbon steel is heavy and atypical for such construction. Aircraft debris was ruled out by the lack of reported incidents and the absence of any plausible mechanism for producing a large molten steel mass. Dumping of molten metal was viewed as logistically implausible given the extreme temperatures required, transportation challenges, and the fact that no local foundries were operating that day.
The 1977 Council Bluffs incident stands as a well-documented case of molten metal deposition accompanied by credible witness observations of unusual aerial activity. While the recovered material is consistent with terrestrial industrial alloys and shows no anomalous isotopic signatures, the circumstances of its appearance — including the reported hovering object, the sudden deposition of incompletely mixed molten metal in a public park, the absence of conventional explanations that fully account for all reported details, and the subsequent scientific scrutiny — continue to make it a subject of serious interest in the study of unidentified aerial phenomena. The combination of contemporary field investigation, early laboratory work, and modern nanoscale analysis provides a model for how such cases can be examined with scientific rigor.
Council Bluffs is one of several well-documented cases in which unidentified aerial objects have reportedly ejected or dropped metallic substances. Jacques F. Vallée and others have catalogued multiple such incidents worldwide, based on reliable witness reports, material recovery, and laboratory analysis. These span multiple decades and locations, including the 1947 Maury Island event (slag-like fragments and thin metal sheets), the 1954 Campinas, Brazil case (silvery liquid stream), the 1957 Ubatuba magnesium fragments (initially described as exceptionally pure, though later isotopic studies found terrestrial ratios), the 1979 laboratory examinations by IBM scientist Dr. Marcel Vogel of alleged UFO metal specimens, the 1985 Bob White teardrop-shaped object recovered in Colorado, and the so-called “Art’s Parts” sample—layered magnesium, aluminum, and bismuth fragments with a distinctive honeycomb structure, allegedly from the 1947 Roswell crash. These cases, like the Council Bluffs incident, illustrate the long-standing interest in physical traces associated with UAP reports and the ongoing scientific study of their unusual composition and microstructure.
