Across cultures and centuries, people have reported receiving messages from intelligences that present themselves as non-human, discarnate, or existing beyond ordinary physical reality (interdimensional). These claims appear in the spiritual diaries of Renaissance mathematicians, the trance sessions of Spiritualist mediums, the contactee literature, and the book-length channelings of the modern New Age movement. The entities named in these accounts range from classical archangels and ascended masters to social memory complexes, extraterrestrial commanders, and collective consciousnesses that speak as “we.”
Particular attention was paid to the specific names or identities the sources themselves provided. The methods recorded are equally varied: deep trance, hypnosis, automatic writing, crystal scrying, spontaneous voice phenomena, telepathy, and face-to-face or visual encounters.
Sumi
Sumi is the name attributed in later Maria Orsic and Vril Society to an alleged intelligence associated with the Aldebaran star system. Orsic participated in a séance in Munich in November 1924 with figures including Rudolf von Sebottendorff. During the session, a voice reportedly identified itself as Sumi from Aldebaran and described the Sumi as an ancient humanoid civilization connected with Earth’s distant past. The story claims that these beings had once colonized Earth and were linked by the communicators to ideas about ancient human ancestry.
Sumi is particularly important because it is one of the few specifically named communicating identities in the Orsic legend rather than merely an unnamed Aldebaran source. Spectra
In late 1971, American physician and parapsychological researcher Andrija Puharich met Israeli psychic Uri Geller in Tel Aviv. During hypnosis sessions intended to explore the source of Geller’s claimed abilities, Geller began to channel an intelligence linked to a spacecraft computer system. Spectra is presented in Puharich’s account as the communicating voice or intelligence associated with a computer system aboard a spacecraft. Tom is the primary spokesman for the Council of Nine (also called The Nine or the Nine Principles), a collective of nine non-physical, interdimensional intelligences described as pure energy or light-entities of infinite intelligence. They claim to exist outside ordinary time and space, originating from higher dimensions (sometimes called the “zone of cold”), and function as universal facilitators who maintain balance across creation. These entities form a Pleiadian collective — a group of highly evolved, technologically advanced, and benevolent extraterrestrial beings associated with the Pleiades star cluster in the constellation Taurus. The Guides
These entities form The Guides, a collective of non-physical teachers or energetic beings who speak through Paul Selig. Jesus
Jesus (or a voice identifying itself as Jesus) is the claimed source of the material known as A Course in Miracles. Beginning in 1965, psychologist and research scientist Helen Schucman reported hearing an inner voice that dictated the text over a period of years. The voice identified itself as Jesus. Archangel Michael is one of the most frequently claimed sources across both historical and modern channeling literature. He is traditionally the warrior archangel of protection, courage, and the cutting away of fear or lower influences.
Between 1582 and 1587, English mathematician, astrologer, and occultist John Dee, working with scryer Edward Kelley, recorded hundreds of claimed conversations with angels through crystal-gazing (the “shewstone”). The principal named communicators included the archangels Uriel, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, together with Madimi, Nalvage, and numerous other named spirits. These sessions produced the material later called the Enochian system: an angelic language and script, tables, Calls (Keys), and hierarchical structures that Dee believed restored primordial knowledge linked to the patriarch Enoch. Dee recorded the proceedings in detailed spiritual diaries. Uriel (also spelled Urial in some of Dee’s records) is one of the four primary archangels claimed to communicate with John Dee and scryer Edward Kelley during their angelic sessions (mainly 1582–1587). In the spiritual diaries, Uriel was among the earliest and most frequent contacts. He is described as governor of the earth and the southern cardinal point and played a central role in introducing other angels and delivering instructions related to the tables, seals, and the emerging Enochian system. Gabriel is one of the four primary archangels claimed to communicate with John Dee and Edward Kelley. In Dee’s spiritual diaries, Gabriel appeared regularly alongside Michael, Raphael, and Uriel. Raphael
Raphael is one of the four primary archangels claimed to communicate with John Dee and Edward Kelley. Madimi
Madimi (sometimes rendered Madini) is a distinctive named angel who frequently appeared in the scrying sessions of John Dee and Edward Kelley. She often presented herself in the form of a young girl or child and was one of the most recurring individual communicators outside the four main archangels. Madimi engaged in extended dialogues, offered guidance, and is recorded as interacting in a more personal and conversational manner than many of the higher hierarchical angels. Nalvage
Nalvage is a named angel who communicated with John Dee and scryer Edward Kelley during their angelic sessions in the 1580s. Nalvage played an important role in the delivery of parts of the Enochian system, particularly in the transmission of certain Calls (Keys) and related material. In the spiritual diaries, Nalvage appears as one of the significant individual communicators alongside the four primary archangels and Madimi. Aiwass
Aiwass is the name Aleister Crowley gave to the praeterhuman or discarnate intelligence that he said dictated The Book of the Law (Liber AL vel Legis) to him in Cairo on April 8, 9, and 10, 1904. Crowley described hearing a distinct voice and writing down its words during three one-hour sessions. In the text, Aiwass identifies itself as the minister or messenger of Hoor-paar-kraat. Crowley later described Aiwass as his Holy Guardian Angel while continuing to argue that the intelligence was objectively distinct from his ordinary personality. The Book of the Law became the foundational text of Thelema, making Aiwass one of the most historically consequential claimed non-human communicators in modern Western occultism.
Nuit
Nuit is the Thelemic form of the Egyptian sky goddess Nut and is presented as the principal divine speaker of the first chapter of The Book of the Law. Although Crowley said the book was transmitted to him through Aiwass, the first chapter speaks in the identity and voice of Nuit. In the Thelemic system she represents infinite space, possibility, and the total field in which individual existence occurs. Her appearance is therefore best catalogued as a channeled or transmitted divine identity within the Aiwass communication rather than as a separately documented face-to-face encounter.
Hadit
Hadit is the principal divine speaker of the second chapter of The Book of the Law. Crowley’s Thelemic interpretation presents Hadit as the infinitely concentrated point, the center of experience, motion, and the inner flame of individual consciousness, complementary to the infinite extension represented by Nuit. As with Nuit, the chapter was recorded by Crowley during the April 1904 reception that he attributed to Aiwass. Hadit therefore belongs in the catalogue as a named divine intelligence whose words were presented through a claimed transmitted text.
Ra-Hoor-Khuit
Ra-Hoor-Khuit is the principal divine speaker of the third chapter of The Book of the Law and a Thelemic form of Horus associated with the “Crowned and Conquering Child” and the new Aeon proclaimed by Crowley. The third chapter is forceful and martial in tone and establishes Ra-Hoor-Khuit as a central deity of Crowley’s religious system. Crowley maintained that Aiwass transmitted the book, while its three chapters expressed Nuit, Hadit, and Ra-Hoor-Khuit respectively. Ra-Hoor-Khuit therefore qualifies as a named divine source within the claimed 1904 communication.
Abuldiz
Abuldiz, also written Ab-ul-Diz, is a discarnate intelligence associated with a series of communications received by Aleister Crowley through the seer Mary Desti, known magically as Soror Virakam, in 1911. Crowley’s surviving record is known as the Ab-ul-Diz Working. Abuldiz reportedly appeared through Desti’s visions and instructed Crowley in matters connected with his magical work, including the preparation of material that became part of Book 4. Unlike Aiwass, whose voice Crowley said he heard directly, Abuldiz was communicated through a separate seer, making the case closer to mediated visionary or trance communication.
Amalantrah
Amalantrah is the name associated with the principal discarnate intelligence contacted during Aleister Crowley’s Amalantrah Working, conducted in New York during 1918 with Roddie Minor, known as Soror Achitha, and at times other participants. The surviving record describes interviews with a discarnate entity through a seer rather than a direct audible voice heard by Crowley. The sessions combined visionary material, symbolism, personal oracular questions, and occult experimentation. Later writers have frequently connected the Amalantrah Working with Lam, but the surviving record distinguishes the two more ambiguously than many modern summaries suggest.
Babalon
Babalon is a major divine feminine figure in Aleister Crowley’s Thelemic system and appears prominently in The Vision and the Voice, Crowley’s record of his exploration of the Enochian Aethyrs. The text presents visions, voices, ministers, and revelations associated with Babalon, including passages in which she is described as speaking through a minister. Crowley portrayed Babalon as the Mother of Abominations, the Scarlet Woman, and a power associated with surrender of the individual ego, the Cup or Graal, and attainment beyond the Abyss. Because the record explicitly presents communications attributed to her or to beings speaking on her behalf, she fits the catalogue as a named divine intelligence encountered through visionary communication.
Choronzon
Choronzon is the entity Crowley called the Dweller in the Abyss and encountered during the work of the Tenth Aethyr in Bou Saâda, Algeria, in December 1909 with Victor Neuburg. Crowley and Neuburg performed an evocation in which Choronzon was said to manifest and speak. The historical record is unusual because it is not entirely clear whether Crowley regarded himself as the medium through which Choronzon manifested or whether the entity was understood to occupy the ritual triangle independently. The episode is preserved in The Vision and the Voice and became one of the best-known spirit-communication episodes in Crowley’s career. Choronzon should therefore be included while labeling the method as ritual evocation or possible mediumistic manifestation rather than ordinary trance channeling.
Lam
Lam is the name attached to a distinctive humanoid figure drawn by Aleister Crowley and later interpreted by occultists as a non-human or interdimensional intelligence. The figure’s large head and narrow facial features have led modern UFO writers to compare it with later “Grey” imagery. Crowley’s connection with Lam is often linked to the 1918 Amalantrah Working, and the Unidentified Phenomena article on Crowley describes Lam as a preternatural entity contacted during those workings. However, the surviving Amalantrah Working record does not appear to name Lam directly, and later occult writers substantially developed the identification. Lam should remain in the catalogue because a durable tradition explicitly treats it as a contacted intelligence associated with Crowley, but the entry should clearly state that the direct primary-source attribution is less secure than it is for Aiwass, Abuldiz, or Amalantrah.
What unites them is the consistent assertion that intelligence—sometimes individual, sometimes collective—can and does communicate across the boundary that ordinary experience treats as absolute. Whether the reported sources are framed as angels, interdimensional, extraterrestrials, social memory complexes, ascended masters, or aspects of a unified Source, the human intermediaries have recorded names, personalities, cosmologies, and instructions with striking specificity.
Certain patterns recur. Many of the entities emphasize free will and personal responsibility. Warnings about nuclear weapons, environmental imbalance, and technological hubris appear across contactee and channeling literature from the 1950s onward. Hierarchical systems (councils, densities, rays, commands) are common, as is the claim that Earth occupies a unique or critical position in a larger evolutionary process.
