He enlisted in the air force in 1951 and soon after was accepted into pilot cadet training. Torres was awarded his pilot’s wings and flew F-86Ds at Perrin AFB, Texas, and RAF Station Manston in England during the Cold War. His academic pursuits led him to the University of Oklahoma, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in General Engineering and a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering. Later, he furthered his education by acquiring a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Miami in Coral Gables. After his military service, Torres became a professor at Florida International University in Miami, Florida, where he worked until his full retirement in 2001
