The Amaury Rivera abduction incident is a frequently cited and highly detailed case within UFO and alien abduction research. The case centers on Amaury Rivera Toro, a resident of Puerto Rico, who described an encounter with non-human entities, an alleged abduction aboard a craft, and the taking of multiple photographs of a UFO during the event. Rivera has consistently stated that the experience occurred during the early morning hours of May 14, 1988, in the Sierra Bermeja region near Laguna Cartagena, within the municipality of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico.
Amaury Rivera Toro was working at a nightclub at the time of the incident and has stated that he had no prior fascination with UFOs or extraterrestrial topics. He did not seek publicity and did not initially report the experience publicly. According to Rivera, the incident began at approximately 4:30 a.m. as he was driving home alone along a quiet, isolated country backroad after attending a musical group performance at his cousin’s house. The area was dark, with little to no traffic, heightening the sense of isolation when the event unfolded.
Rivera reported that his drive was suddenly interrupted by a thick, unnatural blanket of fog that enveloped the road. He then experienced a strong buzzing or vibrational sensation inside the vehicle, followed by a brief loss of consciousness. When he regained awareness, his car had abruptly lost power and come to a complete stop. Believing it to be a mechanical failure, he exited the vehicle to investigate.
At that moment, Rivera claims he was approached by two small beings, approximately three to four feet tall, with pale skin, oversized heads, large black bulging eyes, and pointed ears that gave them a theatrical or jester-like appearance. He stated they wore olive-green one-piece suits and projected an overwhelming and intimidating presence. In his recollections, Rivera emphasized that the entities evoked an intense fear he struggled to describe, at times comparing their appearance to demonic or clown-like figures.
Rivera reported that the beings communicated telepathically and exerted control over him without physical force. He stated that he felt paralyzed and unable to resist or flee as he was compelled toward a nearby disc-shaped craft, experiencing a sense of complete mental and physical domination.
The craft was described as metallic and disc-shaped, approximately forty to fifty feet in diameter, emitting a low humming sound as it hovered. Rivera stated that he was taken aboard via a ramp or beam-like entry. Inside, the environment was brightly lit, with metallic walls and panels emitting multicolored lights. He was placed on a table and subjected to medical-style examinations using instruments he could not identify.
Rivera reported seeing a large number of other abducted humans inside the craft, estimating between twenty and twenty-six individuals, including men, women, and children. All appeared disoriented or semi-conscious and were believed to have been taken from the same region during the same night.
During the experience, Rivera encountered a taller humanoid figure, approximately five feet seven inches tall, with dark skin and long black hair reaching the shoulders. This being wore black clothing and was accompanied closely by the smaller entities, whom Rivera interpreted explicitly as bodyguards. Unlike the others, the taller figure spoke verbally in flawless Spanish and identified himself as an extraterrestrial from a distant planet, despite his human-like appearance.
The humanoid entity reportedly showed Rivera a series of holographic projections that appeared vivid, immersive, and instructional. Rivera described being shown scenes of the being’s home planet and its inhabitants, followed by images of future catastrophic events on Earth. These included a comet or asteroid impact off the coast of Puerto Rico that would generate massive tsunamis and environmental devastation, with debris forming what was described as a new landmass or continent. Additional imagery depicted widespread destruction, social collapse, solar flares, earthquakes, and global instability.
Rivera recalled that the being warned humanity was on a path toward self-destruction due to pollution, warfare, and internal division, and urged unity and change to avoid catastrophe. He quoted the entity as stating they came from far away to help and to warn, emphasizing that the projections were deliberate messages rather than symbolic visions. Rivera stressed that the experience felt purposeful and instructional rather than random or dreamlike.
After what Rivera perceived as several hours aboard the craft, he was returned to the same roadside location where the encounter began. Before his release, the beings reportedly issued a telepathic warning instructing him not to speak about what had occurred. Upon returning home, Rivera realized that several hours were unaccounted for, a phenomenon commonly described as missing time in abduction research. He reported feeling dizzy, disoriented, and physically shaken.
In a state of panic, Rivera stated that he grabbed his Kodak Instamatic 110 camera, loaded with 1988-era film, and returned outside. He claimed to have taken four to five photographs in sequence of the disc-shaped UFO hovering nearby, which he later said was being pursued by two U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat fighter jets attempting to intercept the object. Shortly after the incident, Rivera reported visits from unidentified agents who demanded the photographic negatives.
