Joyce Bowles and Ted Pratt Abduction (1976)

Joyce Bowles, a British Rail employee, and Edwin “Ted” Pratt, an ex-farm manager, reported a series of extraordinary encounters near Winchester, Hampshire. The first event occurred while they were driving to pick up Bowles’s son from his girlfriend’s house in Chilcomb.

On November 14, 1976, just before 9:00 pm, while traveling along the A31 near Chilcomb, Bowles and Pratt reported seeing an orange glow in the sky. Bowles initially described two orange lights, one above the other, while Pratt perceived a single bright orange-red object roughly forty feet long flying at about eight hundred feet. Their car, a Mini Clubman, suddenly began to shudder as the steering locked. The vehicle lurched to the right, the engine roaring independently while a heavy pressing sensation was felt. The car moved diagonally across the road as if floating and came to rest on a grass verge. Pratt reached over and turned off the ignition. The headlights then intensified dramatically, described as several times brighter than normal, and an invisible barrier initially prevented them from driving away.

Nearby, they observed a cigar-shaped object, described as resembling a thick Winston Churchill cigar, approximately twelve feet long and five feet high, hovering about eighteen inches above the ground. Vapor or jet-like gases were seen beneath it. The object featured three brightly lit bow windows, through which three humanoid figures were visible from the shoulders up, seated one behind the other.

A humanoid figure then appeared to pass directly through the side of the craft without any visible door. The being, estimated at around five to six feet tall, wore a silver suit. Its appearance included a pointed beard with sideburns, and hair that was short at the front but longer and curled at the back with silvery flecks. The figure walked normally to the driver’s side of the car, placed a hand on the roof, and leaned in to look through the window. It appeared to briefly examine the dashboard controls before walking toward the rear of the car. Its eyes were described as piercing and pink, with no clearly visible pupils or irises. Bowles found the gaze deeply disturbing and later reported seeing spots, similar to the effect of staring at the sun. Pratt, in contrast, described a sense of peace and tranquillity, noting that the encounter seemed to calm his angina. A kettle-like whistling sound was heard during this moment. When they briefly looked away, both the figure and the craft vanished instantly.

A second encounter occurred at approximately 6:30 pm on December 30, 1976, along a road near the earlier location as they traveled toward Chilcomb and a nearby gas station. As evening darkness set in, they again observed a glow in the sky, accompanied by a high-pitched whistling sound. Their car began to rock and vibrate, after which both individuals experienced a sudden disruption in memory.

They then found themselves standing outside their vehicle within a structured interior space associated with the craft. Inside, they encountered beings wearing silver coveralls that shimmered like tin foil, along with shiny boots and gauntlet-like gloves. One of the figures appeared to be the same entity from the first encounter. Communication reportedly occurred in broken English, with statements suggesting no harm and nothing to fear. One being reportedly told Bowles that she had a very strong tongue.

They were shown diagrams on the walls described as representing “fields,” though not in the conventional sense. A central structure was also observed, resembling a bottle with a wide base tapering upward, marked with colored rings and symbols in black and yellow. Pratt engaged more actively, asking questions and even testing the temperature of another area, while Bowles’s recollection of these events was more limited and hazy.

At some point, the experience became indistinct rather than ending with a flash. They later found themselves back in their car near a river on an unfamiliar road. From there, they drove for approximately thirty minutes, eventually reaching Chilworth and arriving home around 8:15 pm.

They were unable to account for roughly one hour of time during the journey. Unlike earlier summaries suggesting complete loss of memory, both retained partial but unclear recollections of conversations, visual displays, and the central device, with Pratt recalling more detail than Bowles.

Joyce Bowles had a documented history of paranormal experiences prior to the incident, including reports of poltergeist activity, repeated apparitions such as a white-robed figure and a black nun, and involvement in psychic or healing practices. Family members reportedly corroborated some of these experiences, and two exorcisms were performed in 1972. Pratt, however, had no known history of similar experiences. Investigators later noted Bowles’s background as a factor when evaluating the case.

Multiple independent witnesses reported similar glowing, cigar-shaped objects in the Winchester area during the same period. At least eight additional reports described either glowing cigar-shaped craft or sightings of a silver-suited figure in the same region that weekend. The case was extensively investigated by organizations including BUFORA and Flying Saucer Review, with investigators such as Frank J. Wood examining the vehicle and searching for physical traces, though no conclusive evidence was found. The first encounter is typically categorized as a close encounter of the third kind, while the second includes elements consistent with onboard or abduction-type experiences.

Following the incident, Bowles reportedly received two unsettling phone calls from individuals claiming to represent government authorities, warning her against speaking publicly. She also developed a rash on the right side of her head and shoulder. For weeks afterward, her telephone reportedly gave a constant engaged tone, even when the receiver was left off the hook. The publicity surrounding the case is said to have contributed to her losing her position at Winchester railway station in 1977.

Bowles reported at least two additional encounters in 1977, including one in May with a friend, Ann Strickland, during which the being delivered a message she stated she “wouldn’t dare” repeat, and another in June again with Pratt. These later experiences reportedly included communications involving warnings about war and planetary harm. After June 1977, the sightings ceased.

The Winchester Incident remains one of the more detailed and unusual cases in UFO history, notable for the specificity of the craft description, the structured interaction reported by the witnesses, and the differing psychological responses between Bowles and Pratt.
