Perth County, Ontario

Perth County is a rural county located in southwestern Ontario, Canada, east of Lake Huron. The closest military base to the county would be the Canadian Forces Base Borden, which is located approximately 150 kilometers northeast of the county.

Canadian Forces Base Borden is located in the city of Borden, Ontario, and is the largest training base of the Canadian Armed Forces. The base was established in 1916, and over the years has served as a training ground for various branches of the Canadian military, including the Army, Air Force, and Navy. The base is home to a variety of training facilities and units, including the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering, the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics, and the Canadian Forces School of Administration and Logistics. The base is also used for research and development projects related to military equipment and technology.

To the west of Perth County is the Bruce Nuclear Power Plant, which is the largest nuclear power plant in North America. The power plant is located on the shore of Lake Huron, approximately 30 kilometers from the western border of Perth County. The plant was constructed in stages over a period of several years, with additional reactors being added in 1978, 1984, and 1987.

The plant has eight nuclear reactors and provides approximately 30% of the electricity used in the province of Ontario. In addition to generating electricity, the Bruce Nuclear Power Plant is also responsible for the storage of spent nuclear fuel. Spent nuclear fuel is highly radioactive and must be stored in a secure and controlled environment to prevent contamination and ensure public safety.

The Bruce Nuclear Power Plant uses a system of dry storage to store its spent nuclear fuel. The dry storage system consists of a series of concrete and steel containers, known as dry casks, which are designed to hold the spent nuclear fuel. The casks are filled with inert gas to prevent the fuel from coming into contact with air and are stored in a secure facility on the plant site. The plant has been in operation for several decades, and therefore has generated a significant amount of spent nuclear fuel.

Perth County is primarily a rural county, with a mix of agricultural and industrial activities. The largest city in the county is Stratford, which is known for its Shakespearean theater festival. Other cities and townships in the county include Perth East, West Perth, North Perth, and St. Marys.
