Babalon Working
The Babalon Working was a series of occult rituals conducted in 1946 by rocket scientist Jack Parsons and L. Ron Hubbard, the future founder of Scientology. These rituals were deeply influenced by Aleister Crowley’s Thelemic teachings, specifically aiming to invoke the goddess Babalon, a key figure in Crowley’s philosophy representing the archetype of the liberated woman and the feminine divine force.
Jack Parsons was a pioneering American rocket scientist and a key figure in the development of modern rocketry. He co-founded the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Aerojet Engineering Corporation, contributing significantly to advancements in rocket propulsion technology. Parsons had a dual life as a scientist and occultist with groundbreaking contributions to aerospace and esoteric mysticism.
The rituals took place from January to March 1946 and were designed to incarnate Babalon in human form through a combination of ceremonial magic and sex magic practices. Parsons, guided by Hubbard, used a series of complex invocations, culminating in what Parsons believed was a successful summoning of the “Scarlet Woman.” Parsons met Marjorie Cameron shortly after, whom he believed embodied the goddess Babalon.
Ron Hubbard played the role of scribe and high priest during the rituals, adding a layer of intrigue to his later life and career. Parsons documented these events in his writings, most notably Liber 49, also known as The Book of Babalon which he claimed was a direct transmission from the goddess Babalon.
Although the Babalon Working did not result in the birth of a magical child, Parsons believed that the rituals had succeeded in bringing the goddess’s spirit into the world, preparing for her full manifestation. Jack Parsons continued his explorations in magic until his death in a tragic explosion on June 17, 1952, in his home laboratory in Pasadena.
Nick Redfern has made some unconventional connections between the Babalon Working rituals and the 1947 Roswell UFO incident. According to Redfern, he suggests that the Babalon Working—a series of occult rituals led by Jack Parsons and L. Ron Hubbard in 1946—may have opened portals or invited otherworldly forces that could be connected to the UFO phenomenon. Redfern speculates that these rituals may have unintentionally played a role in setting the stage for the Roswell incident in July 1947.
In his research, Redfern also explores the possibility that the Roswell crash wasn’t extraterrestrial at all, but rather linked to top-secret military experiments involving human subjects and advanced technology, potentially influenced by occult practices like those of Parsons and Crowley. This theory is outlined in his book Final Events, where he investigates government secrets, demonic UFO theories, and occult practices, suggesting that some UFOs may have a more sinister, spiritual, or demonic origin rather than extraterrestrial.
