Dr. Edgar Mitchell
Dr. Edgar Mitchell was an American astronaut and the sixth man to walk on the moon. He is best known for his interest in extraterrestrial life and his advocacy for the release of classified information about UFO sightings and encounters.
Mitchell was born on September 17, 1930, in Hereford, Texas. He earned a degree in industrial management from the Carnegie Mellon University and a Doctorate in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1966 and took part in the Apollo 14 mission to the moon in 1971.
After his return from the moon, Mitchell became a strong advocate for the release of classified information about UFO sightings and encounters. He believed that the information was being suppressed by the government and that the public had a right to know about it. He also believed that extraterrestrial life existed and that contact with it could bring about a major shift in human consciousness.
Mitchell founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences which is dedicated to investigating the nature of consciousness and exploring the frontiers of human understanding. He also wrote several books on the topic of extraterrestrial life and UFO sightings, including “The Way of the Explorer” and “Psychic Exploration: A Challenge for Science”.
The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) is a nonprofit research, education, and membership organization founded by Edgar Mitchell in 1973. This organization was established following Mitchell’s return from the Apollo 14 mission, where he experienced a profound shift in his consciousness and understanding of reality, known as the Overview Effect.
The Overview Effect is a cognitive shift in awareness reported by some astronauts during spaceflight, often while viewing the Earth from outer space. It’s named after the “overview” one gets of our planet when viewed from space.
This transformative experience tends to consist of several key insights:
- Interconnectedness: Astronauts often report a profound sense of the interconnectedness of all life and human systems on Earth. They can clearly see that Earth is a unified system with no visible political or national boundaries from space.
- Fragility of the Earth: Viewing the Earth from space, astronauts often realize just how small and fragile our planet appears against the backdrop of the cosmos. This can lead to a newfound appreciation and concern for the environment and our planet’s ecosystems.
- Sense of Oneness: The experience often instills a sense of unity and oneness with other people and life on Earth. This can lead to feelings of peace, love, and a desire for global cooperation.
The term “Overview Effect” was first coined by space philosopher and writer Frank White in 1987. White found that many astronauts reported these kinds of experiences and insights, and he has since written extensively on the topic.
The mission of the Institute is to reveal the interconnected nature of reality through scientific exploration and personal discovery. They focus on exploring the nature of consciousness, which they define as “the inner subjective experience of individuals,” and its potential impact on the world.
The Institute’s work is broadly divided into several main areas:
- Research: IONS conducts and promotes research into a wide range of topics related to consciousness and spirituality, including but not limited to psychic abilities, mind-body healing, and the impact of intention and attention. Their research is often interdisciplinary, drawing from fields like neuroscience, psychology, and physics.
- Education: The Institute offers a variety of educational programs, ranging from webinars and online courses to in-person retreats and workshops. These programs are intended to help people develop a deeper understanding of consciousness and its potential effects on their lives.
- Community: IONS also operates a membership program that includes benefits like access to exclusive content, opportunities to participate in research, and discounts on educational programs.
Mitchell’s founding of IONS was directly linked to his experiences as an astronaut and his resulting belief in the interconnectedness of all things, an understanding often associated with mystical and spiritual experiences. Despite the controversy surrounding some of its research topics, IONS has made significant contributions to the field of consciousness studies.
In February 2016, Dr. Mitchell passed away at the age of 85. Despite his death, his legacy continues to inspire people who are interested in the topic of extraterrestrial life and UFO sightings.

Mitchell’s views align with those of certain individuals who believe that the creation of the National Security Act of 1947, and specifically the institutions it established such as the CIA, led to a situation where details about UFOs could be classified and hidden from public scrutiny.
The argument is that these organizations, in their efforts to safeguard national security, could have seen it as necessary to gather, analyze, and perhaps even hide information about unidentified flying objects (UFOs) or occurrences linked to extraterrestrial life. Those holding this belief often argue that any phenomena presenting possible threats or potential for technological advancement would fall within the scope of national security concerns.
Dr. Edgar Mitchell was a pioneering astronaut, advocate for UFO and UAP disclosure, and a visionary in the field of extraterrestrial life research. His life and work continue to inspire people who are interested in the topic of UFO sightings and encounters, and his legacy will live on for generations to come.
